I get a slight creaking from the top of the windshild/headliner when the top is down.

I should have been more specific, I meant with the top up.

My 99 has an endent you have to press it past for the one touch down.

That is either missing or broken in my 2001, can anyone confirm?

Try the CD-R's at home if they don't skip there then they should work in the car, I don't think anyone makes an aftermarket changer, the MB units are optical.

No, the CDs do not skip at home. My Alpine in my Mustang RARELY skips, and it is just as harsh a ride as the SLK.

First gear is good to about 30 mph with the 5800 rpm redline, a bit more with the 6200 rpm(it's very short, the car is not light)

Is that bad for the car, per se?

I get it following road groves at slow speeds but not at high speeds.

Define slow and high speeds so I can try. :)
