Actually the engine will start but will stop after about 1 second if the code is not recognized.
It will work if there is NO battery or a dead battery in the key. The Valet key that comes with the vehicle has NO battery.
The RFID ignition disable system does not use rolling codes.
The above info is for the 1998 M-Class vehicles. I don't know what the other Mercedes vehicles use.
