I bought a '83 300TD on eBay for $860...I wasn't
expecting much. There is rust, but it turns out is
only on the outer edges, that MB undercoating is near
bullet-proof. But, there was a terrible engine knock
during acceleration, my MB mechanic, who has done many
rebuilds said it sounded like a wrist pin...I had
resigned myself to do a rebuild or exchange.
The other day, while getting on a freeway, there was a
"POP"...and the knock was gone! but there was a loss
of power, it turns out the #3 injector holder had a big 'ol crack...it was leaking profusely. I figured the knock was gone because the stress was taken from the offending cylinder.
but
I changed the injector, and, NO MORE KNOCK!!
Now she purrs like a kitten, and 'moves out' very
nicely.
I love it, a $70 injector, instead of a $2000 rebuild.
So, if you have a nasty knock, get a good injector,
and start the process of elimination...let your wife
or girl friend pick the one to start with, women's
intuition is real...and it might give her a sense of
participation.
I got this car just to experiment with alternative fuels, but the more I work on it and drive it, the more I've fallen in love with it...it has become my "main ride".
