RE: AMG Hammer for sale in the UK

A true AMG "Hammer" would not have the 5.0 engine. They came with the 5.6 and the 6.0 with 4 cams. The car is possibly an early '85 model. When they say it needs a new engine block, they probably mean the heads are bad. If they are bad, you'll need to swap in a different motor if you want to enjoy it. Good thing is, it should be ready to take another V8. Unless you can find another 4 cam motor, you may just consider throwing in a 5.6 Euro.
Yeah I thought the same as you 5.6 and 6.0, however, judging by an AMG site I found they manufactured a 5.0 between 1984 and 1986 for the European market and the 5.6 between 1986 and 1988 and the 6.0 after that.

Having seen the car today, I found out that it does infact need a new block. Apparently the Hammers always had a problem with blowing head gaskets and in an effort to fix it a so called specialist fitted oversized helicoils which were located too close to the cylinders and when the heads were tightend, they were tightend too tight and it caused a very minor distortion to the cylinder walls, which would then cause a failure of the gaskets when the engine was under pressure, which then resulted in water loss.

I checked the engine over (its out of the car) and it has AMG serial numbers stamped into the block and heads. The block also had a Merc M117 engine serial number on it and 5.0 stamped into it.

The rest of the car is in very good condition. The engine was taken out 7 years ago and the car was put into vacuum storage.....basically an environmentally controlled tent. The bodywork is rust and damage free with good blue/black paintwork. Interestingly the car was not specified with any AMG bodywork, so it just looks like a regular 300E with big AMG wheels and AMG Exhaust. The interior is dark blue leather with Recarro's and AMG dials and electric everything....all in good condition. Bodyshell has the AMG serial numbers stamped into it which check out.

This car was apparently sold by Stratstones who were the main AMG dealer in the UK and was used by them as a Press demonstration car....it only has 46,000 miles from new with a full history. Apparently it was clocked at 175mph during a car test with the press.

So the questions I have are as follows;

Do you think a regular M117 5.0 block will marry up to the heads....a tough question I know.

Secondly, if all else fails do you think a regular m117 5.0 would fit in and would I need the auto box that goes with the 5.0, as I understand the Hammer used a modified S Class box. Would i also need the the ECU etc for the 5.0

HAS ANYBODY GOT ANY IDEAS HERE????????
