A true AMG "Hammer" would not have the 5.0 engine. They came with the 5.6 and the 6.0 with 4 cams. The car is possibly an early '85 model. When they say it needs a new engine block, they probably mean the heads are bad. If they are bad, you'll need to swap in a different motor if you want to enjoy it. Good thing is, it should be ready to take another V8. Unless you can find another 4 cam motor, you may just consider throwing in a 5.6 Euro.
