RE: Transmission model number? Fluid?

Here is the transmission code for all MB's 1995-1999:

http://www.austauschgetriebe.net/Application.2.htm

The transmission code is also in your manual, on the sheet that is glued to inside of your back cover.

My transmission is 722.508. From searching on the web, it seems that the 722.508 was the last of the "vacuum controlled" transmissions before the introduction of the "electric transmissions".

It seems (though I'm not absolutely sure) that the "electric transmissions" use the special MB fluid. And the earlier "vacuum transmissions" use Dexron.

The reason I say I'm not sure what fluid to use, is that I read on the web that my 722.508 (vacuum?) should use Dexron, BUT the local mercedes service shops say I need the MB fluid.

I suppose one way to find out which fluid is currently in your transmission would be to check the color of the fluid from your dipstick. I believe that all Dexron fluids are RED (not absolutely sure however), and the MB fluid is yellowish color.

Now, does anyone know if the MB fluid can be used in place of Dexron?

Cheers
